Summary: Even with Dhaos supporting her, Grune does not always defeat Schwartz.
Author's Notes: Not a lot to say about this one. It's pretty old, I had to do a fair bit of editing, and there's really not much to it. So, well, yup.

She lost fewer battles now that Dhaos was at her side. The odds were still against her—to bring hope to a world so lost to despair as to call Schwartz was not an insignificant task—but they had improved. To always have with her someone who loved her, no matter where or when she travelled, gave her more strength than Dhaos perhaps guessed. He had difficulty believing that she was stronger now because of him. She hoped in time to convince him.

. . . Even still, she did not always win.

It was hard on Dhaos. She supposed for a man who had once been responsible for the survival of his planet, such failures struck to close to the heart. His own planet had lived on, but he himself had been unable to complete his duty. If it had not been for Aselia's guardian goddess, Derris-Kharlan and its people would not have been unwritten from time, but they would most certainly have decayed and died.

The first loss had been the most difficult for him. She had used what remained of her power to send him back to Derris-Kharlan before she faded. When she had come into being once more and had returned for him, he had been so tormented, she had nearly been forced to leave him behind.

This cycle, many cycles after the first, they had lost once more. She had another name to add to her memories of places that had never existed: Fayne. She would remember it.

When she went to retrieve him this time and he appeared in front of his mana tree, he did not greet her with protests. He did not demand to know why she had sent him away at the cost of what life remained to her. He'd had enough time to learn the futility of those questions.

Instead, he simply stepped forward and enfolded her in his arms. She laid her head against his shoulder and closed her eyes. She did not cry. She never did.

Later, he lifted his head from where it rested upon hers and lowered his lips to hers. Life in the face of death. Love after loss.

After, she told him of their next world. He listened, stroking her hair, and vowed that though they had not succeeded with Fayne, this new place, they would save. She smiled briefly—that had been her own vow for every cycle since her existence began.

All the same, his words gave her hope, and as they prepared to depart, she could set aside the memories of Fayne and begin this cycle with a calm mind and a loving heart.

This time, she and Dhaos would not lose.
