Title: 30-Day Cheesy Tropes Challenge - 19. Vampire AU
Fandom: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Genre: Pre-slash
Rating & Warnings: PG (blood, past consent issues)
Words: This part 2177, ?? overall
Disclaimer: I don't own Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Summary: Ever since Dr. Bashir started inviting Garak to Quark's for drinks, he's become very particular about who touches his glass. Garak intends to find out why.
Author's Notes: I really, really did not expect to enjoy writing this nearly as much as I did. There's just something about a lifelong vampire phobia that suggested to me that #19 would not be one of my favourites. And yet here we are.

But a conspiracy between Dr. Bashir and Quark was ABSURD . . . or so he wanted to believe. )

Summary: To repair the damage done by its interference in the Demilitarised Zone, the Cardassian government has proposed a marriage-enjoinment between one of its citizens and one of the Federation's to symbolise the renewed relations between the two governments. Julian had gladly agreed to marry Garak, Central Command's "volunteer," but now he's learning all over again that nothing involving Cardassians in general and Garak in particular is as simple as it appears on the surface.
Author's Notes: The sequel to Chapter 12 of my fic involving the 30=Day Cheesy Tropes challenge. The trope was, unsurprisingly, "arranged marriage." I had been trying to keep thing short, but by the time I finished writing that chapter, I had way more ideas in my head that were demanding I write them. Eventually, I gave in and got down some of them, and this is the result.

Who knew this trope could be so much fun?

'But the fact of the matter is, I can't make someone else do this. At the very least, I know Garak, and I know that, whatever he might have done, it's in the past. He's a different man now, I'm sure of it.' )

Summary: A look in on the weekly night out of the dabo spinners of DS9.
Author's Notes: My submission to DS9 Tumblr Zine for the prompt "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"!

It didn't take me as long as I expected to think of what I wanted to do for this week's prompt. For all DS9 has so many amazing secondary characters, this popped into my head right away, possibly because I've been writing about Leeta a fair bit lately. I thought it would be nice to give the dabo spinners (because I absolutely refuse to call them "dabo girls") a chance to interact with each other and be more than eye candy. I figure they would get along pretty great, because there's nothing like a common foe *coughQuarkcough* to bring people together.

Not many businesses saw parties of eight turn up every week. )

Summary: When Miles returns from a wartime engineering course, Keiko is glad to have him safe at home again--but soon she realises that all is not well. Now she must gather evidence while protecting her family and without letting on that she knows something is wrong. This chapter: A final test.
Author's Notes: Not a lot to say about this chapter, really! I pretty much exhausted my wordiness in earlier chapters. So I hope you all enjoy this one as Keiko takes one last, large risk.

First Julian had offered to help, then Odo, now there was Nerys and all the senior staff of the station. She wasn't alone anymore, and neither was the real Miles . . . wherever he was. )

Summary: When Miles returns from a wartime engineering course, Keiko is glad to have him safe at home again--but soon she realises that all is not well. Now she must gather evidence while protecting her family and without letting on that she knows something is wrong. This chapter: Strategic meetings.
Author's Notes: So, the other thing I had spent a great deal of time thinking about, in addition to how Keiko might be able to realistically deal with a threat on her own, was how to detect Changelings more effectively than using blood samples. I probably spent the better part of a month mulling this over on my various walks, because as intimidating as DS9 made the Founders, once I saw them introduced, I thought there had to be a loophole or two to exploit--otherwise, well, the Federation was doomed.

I didn't write all the ideas I came up with into the fic, though I did cover a good number of them. It was fun to get the chance to put them to use, so yup!

There they were, side by side, two enemies lying in the same bed and feigning sleep. )

Summary: Kira has never been a fan of holosuites; Dax thinks it's simply a matter of finding the right program. But putting together something fun for both of them is more of a challenge than even Dax is used taking on.
Author's Notes: So it's February. And I had written femslash a month or so ago. Given that it's Femslash February, I figured now might not be a bad time to post it!

This is a partner piece of sorts to "Clearing Skies." I wrote it second, but it takes place first. Go figure. I have at least one other fic related to this that I want to write, but who knows when I'll actually get to it. :D;;

She grimaced. 'I'm sorry, Dax. I tried, like I said I would. But this kind of thing just isn't me.' )

Summary: As a way to make up for continually running out on Garak at lunch, Julian invites him along to one of his holosuite sessions with Chief O'Brien as a way of patching up their friendship. It doesn't work out quite the way he expected. This chapter: Some changes are made to the program, and to Julian's perceptions.
Author's Notes: Not a lot to say about this one, except that I had a lot of fun writing it, and that this chapter contains the scene that sparked the whole fic.

The credit for the image in this chapter (which is used with permission) goes to petaq, art journal at dziwaczka. If you love the picture half as much as I do, I'm sure praise would not go amiss. <3

Summary: Over the past weeks, without realising it, Julian had been taking Garak's company for granted. But no longer: he's going to make certain to properly include Garak in his life from now on, and the first way he intends to do so is--to invite him along to one of his holosuite sessions with Chief O'Brien.
Author's Notes: This fic comes from two sources: an incredibly awesome commission I ordered from petaq (art journal at dziwaczka), and from reading A Stitch in Time by Andrew Robinson, specifically the parts where Garak gets jealous of Julian and Miles' holosuite sessions. With both of those things in mind, I ended up writing this last May, although I haven't had time to clean up and post it until now. I had a lot of fun writing this and learned quite a bit about the Battle of Britain into the bargain, so I hope everyone enjoys the piece!

Thank you to tinsnip for checking this over to make sure relationship things unrolled realistically. I owe you one. <3

Summary: All Starfleet personnel must obtain authorisation from their C.O. as well as clearance from their medical officer before initiating an intimate relationship with an alien species. - VOY 5x17 "The Disease." Enforcing this particular Starfleet regulation is all well and good on a starship, but on an active space station maintained by two separate governments, matters are a little more...challenging.
Author's Notes: The moment I learned of this particular regulation, I knew I had to write a DS9 fic about it. While on one hand it does make sense that people would want to know whether there would be any unpleasant side effects to getting it on with a member of another species, on the other, when it comes to a place like DS9, the regulation strikes me as horrendously impractical. Thus: this fic. I took a few liberties with the relationships in this, for purposes of fun and shipping bias, but the majority of pairings in this are canon compliant.

On a side note, I came this close to titling the fic "Alien Banging Regulations," and it's all Ereka's fault.

There was, in fact, only one new task he did not relish: giving the Starfleet personnel on his station permission to initiate intimate interspecies relationships. )

Summary: Julian learns that pride goeth before a fall and kanar provides an express trip groundwards. Garak learns that, just perhaps, in wine (or kanar) there is the truth.
Author's Notes: There were two things that inspired this. First, this lovely piece of fanart by Kyuketsuki-Vain (their art blog is here--thanks, Lemonsweetie!), and second, a note in the Cardassian sourcebook that stated that kanar is "highly intoxicating." The piece practically wrote itself after those.

Thank you to tinsnip for betaing and to Ereka for the correct Latin conjugation of "kanar." Bless both you wonderful people. <3

Summary: Julian and Kira return from the Mirrorverse physically in one piece. Their mental and emotional recoveries, however, aren't so straightforward. This part: Julian reconciles the roles the different versions of his friends play and comes to terms with one Mirrorverse death in particular.
Author's Notes: So this got long. Really long, which is why I haven't updated this fic since it was posted. Originally, this was supposed to be a single chapter, but there was just so much awful thrown at Julian and Kira in this episode that I ended up just writing and writing and writing the fallout. So it's now in three parts, one of which is very short, but, well, it made more thematic sense to divide it up that way.

This three-parter brought to you by "Have You Ever" by The Offspring, which turned up on my mp3 player the moment I began my planning.
