Summary: Grune is the only one who can stop Schwartz from hurting her friends, and even if she can't remember why, even if she can't possibly hope to win, she'll fight to protect them.
Author's Notes: So this is what happened and Grune during Luceti's Forth Wall event. I didn't really have any way to convey it in the course of RPing with everyone, so I ended up writing it out like this. Grune pulls this exact same stunt in Legendia--or, from her perspective, she will pull this exact same stunt. For someone who's so concerned with helping others, she's sure not very good at accepting help herself.

"That's it," Grune murmured and gently patted the willow sapling's bare branches. "You're doing a good job. Keep resting and wake up nice and ready to grow in the spring."

She smiled at the little tree for extra encouragement. This was Giles' special tree, and so she made sure to visit her often to check on her. It was more for his sake than out of necessity; she and Willow both knew she was more than strong enough to survive even a very cold and windy winter.

It was just as she was about to take her hand away that it happened. She had been absently humming a happy little tune to herself—and then the notes dried in her throat as her head was crushed with intense pain.

A harsh gasp, tearing at her, and—oh, no, no don't fall, don't fall on Willow, please—she jerked sideways, caught herself, and stumbled to one knee away from the sapling's branches. Her hands pushed against her temples (please stop, please stop) and—

. . . For a moment and then a moment more, she didn't move. She didn't dare to. Was she better now?

Shaking with pain's absence, she pushed herself to her feet. No one seemed to have noticed her fall. That was good. She didn't want anyone to be upset.

She closed her eyes. She opened them.

"So you've come," she heard someone say. Someone—that was her, wasn't it? If her lips were moving and she'd taken a cold breath, that was her . . . wasn't it?

Why had she said that?

She shook her head. Maybe it wasn't so important if she couldn't remember.

She touched Willow's branches one last time to say sorry for scaring her. Then she finished checking on all the other plants (had she visited some of them twice?) and wandered away.

*

She had been wrong. It had been important.

She knew that now. After nearly two days of saving people from the woman in black—from Schwartz—she knew that very, very well. That was why she was now sitting at her drawing desk with paper and pen, long after everyone else in the house was fast asleep.

She needed to leave a good note so no one would worry. Because she needed to stop Schwartz and she knew all the way down to her heart, all the way down to her soul, that she was the only one who could do it. She couldn't let anyone else come with her. They would only get hurt, and she could never let that happen.

And so she sat and simply . . . looked straight ahead for a while. She didn't know what was going to happen to her. She knew everything would be all right, though.

She hoped everything would be all right.

Eventually, she picked up her pen.

To all my wonderful friends,

I'm sorry I'm leaving like this, but I've remembered something very important I need to do by myself. Don't worry. I'll come back as soon as I can. I might be away for a little while. So, while I'm gone, I want you all to keep smiling, okay?

Fenimore, keep being strong. I know you can do it.

Norma, always help everyone to remember to have a good time, but don't forget to have a good time yourself.

Sophie, keep learning and growing a little more every day. I can't wait to see how big you've gotten when I come back.

Walter, keep watching over everyone, but spend some time with your friends, too.

She paused, thought for a little longer, then added:

Dhaos, make sure you eat every day and do lots of fun things, okay?

Giles, believe in yourself. I know you're a wonderful person.

Alice, don't forget to believe in yourself, too. And Ginia, make sure you let people be just as nice to you as you are to everyone else.

Link, keep helping and protecting Luceti, the way a good brother does.

She paused again. She wanted to write more, lots more, but . . . time was running out.

In the end, she finished with:

Everyone else, I'm sorry I can't write any more. Remember that I love all of you very, very much.

Goodbye. I'll see all of you again soon.

Love,

Grune

Carefully, she set aside her pen. She picked up her urn.

Moving as quietly as she could, she left House 34 and began the long, cold walk out of the village.

*

It took her a long time to reach Schwartz, even though she walked steadily and without hesitating. When she reached the right spot—a snowy forest clearing—she stopped. It seemed as if she were alone, but she knew she wasn't. She couldn't see Schwartz, but she could feel her potential in the air.

A few moments of stillness and waiting . . . and then black mist and purple light blossomed, forming into the figure of the woman she had come to meet.

Without speaking, Schwartz watched her as the black mist boiled about her; it didn't dare approach, but stayed restlessly contained. Equally silent, Grune watched her back. She shifted her grip on her urn, but that was all.

At last, Schwartz said, "You have come here, though you have no memory and have barely begun to awaken. Why is this?"

"You're hurting people. I need to stop you." No—that wasn't quite right. "I'm the only one who can stop you. . . . Do you know why?"

"You will learn in time—though you may well learn too late."

Already, she could feel Schwartz preparing to leave. She couldn't let that happen. If she did, Schwartz would keep hurting more and more people. She had to keep everyone safe.

Grune took in a deep breath, and just as Schwartz began to disappear, shouted, "Stop, Schwartz!"

The other woman paused, then obeyed, fading back into being. She watched dispassionately as the sleeping trees were lit by the light that blazed from Grune's fingernails.

"You would fight me, though it is not the appointed time?" Just a shade of contempt coloured her voice. "You are a fool, Grune."

"I won't let you hurt anyone else!"

She didn't notice the commanding change in her own voice; she would have no idea of its significance even if she had.

Schwartz held out her hand. A great, double-headed axe appeared in her grasp. "You will regret your impulsiveness."

Grune paid her no attention. All her focus was on being the first to strike.

Faster, faster, faster. . . .

"Ray."

Light grew over Grune's head. She had only seconds left. She gave one final push—

And fell asleep.

*

Grune woke up shivering. For some reason, she seemed to have decided to go to bed outside last night. And she had brought her urn with her. Why had she done that?

. . . Oh well. If she couldn't remember why, it mustn't have been important.

With that settled, she picked herself up and brushed the snow from her dress, then shouldered her urn and walked back home.

Awwwwwww, man, Vyc! ^-^ I'd forgotten how much fun it is to read when Grune is a badass. Because, Grune in this fic? So. Very. Badass.

Hee, thank you! ♥ Writing Grune being badass is my not remotely secret weakness.

It must be why you do such a good job with True!Grune~.

(Also, my god, I'm glad you added in the waking up bit at the end. I thought Grune was gonna disappear for a while or something, and Giles had a horrible enough time waking up after the 4th Wall event without Grune going missing!)

(////) You flatter me, seriously.

(Yeah, I wasn't up for dealing with the mess that would cause, so I went with some rather cheap timing. Yup.)

Well, since nearly everyone who met Schwartz technically died for several hours, I'd say the 4th Wall Event is, in a lot of ways, about cheap timing. I played Giles as having some aftereffects, but mostly on the physical anxiety attack symptoms side.

Yeah, I saw that! Grune would have felt so bad if she'd realized that she was technically responsible. D:

Yes! I'm certainly not going to disagree.

She actually does the exact same thing in canon (...although I didn't realize how similar the two Norma messages were until just now, whoops!). It's really sweet and sad, so of course I had to do my own take on it.

Awwwww, Grune. (Now I regret skipping out on Fourth Wall; the interaction between Ginia and Schwarz could have been interesting.)

More mind warping and trauma for Ginia? Sign me up!

Lovely fic. ♥ Agreeing with Hickumu, Grune is awesome as a badass and you do such a wonderful job writing that.

Oho! I think I'll use the Fourth Wall situation for how Ginia runs into Schwarz. Probably the easiest to work with in regards to the situation and why she would be out?
