Author's Notes: After reading about angels on Wikipedia (what? I was bored), I got the idea to do a series of quickfics on the ToS characters' attitudes toward angels. I forgot about it until today. Here's the first in the series.

When Botta had been a child, he had believed in angels. Towering figures on stained-glass windows, the angels he had seen always had an expression of slight sorrow on their beautiful faces, as though they pitied the world for its folly. His father, before he left, used to say every person born in the world had a guardian angel watching out for him or her. Botta had believed him, right up until the day he found himself alone.

After a while of scraping out a living, he had found it difficult to believe anyone else was looking out for his own wellbeing. The idea of angels, especially guardian angels . . . well, it was a nice thought, but that was all it was: a thought.

It was years later when Botta began to believe in angels again, but angels of a different kind. The angels he had encountered upon joining the Renegades were nothing more than cold machines. They were as capable as feeling sorrow and compassion as were the glass angels on the church windows. They were no perfect beings. Botta had found himself almost pitying them, instead of being the one pitied.

One day, arriving in Lord Yuan’s office just a little too early for a meeting, he discovered that once again, he had been wrong. As the wings disappeared from Yuan’s back in a shower of purple sparks, Botta realised that while almost all angels were incapable of compassion, there was one who was different. There was one guardian angel, and he was the caretaker of two whole worlds.
