Title:
30_quills 05. Every moment hesitated is a moment gone from life. (Yui)
Fandoms:
luceti, Tales of Legendia, Yumekui Merry, original works, Full Metal Alchemist
Genre: Gen
Rating: G
Words: 477
Disclaimer: I don't own any of the above fandoms.
Summary: Yui is grateful for all the opportunities coming to Luceti has given her and Grune is, too.
Author's Notes: I really need to post these sooner, before everyone who's signed up has dropped. D:
Anyway, Taisa was a really big help explaining her reasoning behind the prompt, so a big thank you to her! ♥ Unfortunately, it was only after I'd written the piece and was checking around to make sure everything lined up canon-wise that I discovered that in her home manga, Yui is actually a terrible cook.... So, um, basically, assume that Yui's practice with her galpals in Luceti paid off and the rest can fall under Grune being the world's most unreliable narrator.
As always when it comes to canons I'm entirely ignorant of, any mistakes in characterisation or situation are entirely my own. /sob
One of Grune's very favourite things to do is bake with her friends. It doesn't matter if they're experienced like Ginia or just learning like Ran Fan—she always has a good time (because she knows the most important part of baking is spending time with your friends). So when one day Yui asks her if she would like to make chocolate chip cookies together, she immediately agrees.
Yui does a good job measuring out the right amounts for her share of the ingredients and she even remembers to turn on the electric stove before they start so they can make it nice and warm. She seems to be very good at baking!
All the same, as Grune is getting the vanilla, she confides, "I'm glad you could help me. Before I came to Luceti, I wasn't very good at baking at all."
Grune gives her a mildly startled look. "Really?"
"Yes, that's right—thank you, Grune." Yui gently pulls the vanilla from her fingers. "I never needed to be, back home. Someone always did it for me." She starts beating the batter; her words get a little jerky with the movements of her arm. "But that doesn't seem right, here. Luceti is different that way."
"Yes, everyone is very good to to pitch in and help out, aren't they?" Grune agrees. . . . Now what should she do next?
Yui hums. "Actually . . . coming to Luceti made me realize I have a lot of chances here. I mean, there are the experiments and the Malnosso and the drafts, but . . . there are a lot of opportunities, too. Not just the big ones, like getting to meet people from different worlds, but . . . little ones like baking with friends." She pauses and checks the batter. "How does that look, Grune?"
She leans in. Yui has done a nice job of making it smooth and yummy-looking. "Oh, that's very good. The cookies will be delicious, I just know it!"
Yui goes a little pink. "I hope so." But then she smiles. "I never felt like I had time to do something like this very often at home. I always thought I was too busy. . . . I'm glad I got the chance to bake with you now. I hope we can do something else together like this again."
Grune smiles right back. Sometimes, there are things her friends say that she doesn't understand—but this certainly isn't one of them. "I'd like to do something together again, too."
"I'm glad—oh!" Yui looks about. "Um, where are the cookie pans?"
"Hmm. . . ." Grune sets a finger against her cheek to think. "Let me see. . . ."
In the end, Yui is the one to find the pans, and the cookies they bake are wonderful, just as she knew they would be.
