Summary: Some people never want to go home.
Author's Notes: Not a lot to say about this one. It's short, but I think I managed to get the right idea across all the same. I know a number of you were looking forward to reading this one, so I hope I've managed to deliver!
"Grune? Can I ask you something?"
"Oh, yes, of course," she replies immediately, then slips another wild strawberry into her mouth. Link always knows where to find the very sweetest ones.
He sits up and so she does, too. For some reason, he's looking very serious all of a sudden.
"If you could go home from Luceti right now, would you?"
"Hmm. . . ."
That's a tricky question. The Legacy is very nice, and she has all kinds of friends there, but she has all kinds of friends in Luceti, too. She loves all of them, so how could she decide? Still, Link asked her, and she thinks it must be important to him, so she's going to try her best.
". . . You don't have to answer right away," Link tells her after a minute. "I was just wondering."
"Oh, all right." If it's okay to take her time, she'll think about her answer a bit more before giving it. After all, she wants to make it a good one.
He's quiet for a little longer, and then he says, ". . . Some people don't want to go back, you know."
She looks over at him. He's just staring down at his hands and not eating, which is a little surprising, because Link loves strawberries. She pushes the bowl closer to him, in case he can't reach it.
He glances up to give her a brief smile in thanks, but instead of taking any berries, he says, "Some people like it a lot better here."
"Do they?" Those people must have lots of friends here, the same way she does, she thinks.
"Yeah. Because even with all the experiments, Luceti is still a lot nicer than where they come from. Or because they're dead back home. Or. . . ." Link pulls his knees up to his chest and wraps his arms around them. ". . . Because Luceti is their only chance for a normal life. Nobody's expecting them to do all these great things, and—and when people look at them, they don't see some 'hero' —they see the real them." He turns his head to look at her, but that's all he says.
She considers that for a moment. "Then it's very good they came to Luceti, isn't it?"
Link's face relaxes into a smile. "Yeah. . . . Thanks, Grune. For listening, I mean."
"You're welcome," she replies automatically, but then she gives him a puzzled look. Why would he thank her for listening? That's what you're supposed to do with your friends—with everyone. It isn't polite to ignore someone when they're talking.
The question drifts from her mind as she watches Link eat a few more strawberries. It's then replaced by an answer.
"I think. . . ." she begins.
Link looks up. "Uh-huh?"
"I'd like everyone to come to the Legacy," she decides. "Then we could all stay together and be happy. And everyone could make some new friends there, too."
"I'd like that," Link says, smiling again. "I'd love to see your home—it sounds like a really nice place. Maybe that's what we can hope for."
She nods. "I can't wait for everyone to see it."
"You'll have to show me all the best spots to find berries," he agrees, his smile looking stronger by the second.
"All right. I will!"
They spend the rest of the morning eating berries and talking together, and, as much as she loves Luceti, she still looks forward to when they can all go to the Legacy together. That way, everyone can have the very best of both worlds.
