Summary: Fifty small moments between a king and a woman in disguise.
Author's Notes: Being extremely unfamiliar with the Final Fantasy series (I've only ever gotten most of the way through FFX), I thought these would be a lot harder than they turned out to be. I guess Cecil and Grune's long, long threads filled in that particular gaping hole in my gamer credentials. :D;;

A note on #22: I was really reluctant to use "blind" in any sense but visual impairment, but I ended up doing so anyway. I just didn't want to get into that territory in only one sentence. So yeah.

01. Mortal
In a bizarre way, Grune's identity is comforting—here is one friend he will not outlive.

02. Broken
A cheerful greeting from Grune breaks his concentration at the last second and when he appears again, he's . . . where is he?

03. Vanish
He covers his troubled look with a smile for her sake, but soon, he isn't acting.

04. Rain
When she casts a water spell, they both stay completely dry; as he learns Sona's power, they are not so fortunate.

05. Ocean
"On your world . . . the sea is alive?"

06. Tense
Cecil looks all right, but when she pulls him into her arms, she knows he's pretending.

07. Soon
She has no idea why he looks so alarmed when she suggests that maybe Ceodore and Selphie would like children of their own someday.

08. Why
He's learned better than to ask.

09. Winter
He isn't much better at skating than she is, but he's happy to help.

10. Fallen
At least, he thinks as he closes his eyes, he was able to protect her.

11. Storm
Once the winds have blown themselves out and he's certain his family is all right, he gathers with the group of friends who come to help set Grune's garden to rights.

12. Door
She blinks when Cecil hurriedly closes the door in her face—where had all his clothes gone?

13. Flash
He feels triumphant when he catches a flicker of Sona's presence until Grune curiously asks him why he waited so long to say hello.

14. Wait
He finds himself more impatient for Christmas than some of the children; he's looking forward to Grune's reaction when she opens his gift.

15. Shrine
He is no longer at ease with her, but neither does he bow to her—and of that, she can only approve.

16. Black
He carefully avoids discussing recent events in Baron with Grune; knowing his will was so long not his own would only distress her.

17. Lost
By the fourth time he brings Grune home in time for bed, Fenimore is calling him a babysitter and greeting him with a wry smile.

18. Cell
During one terrible experiment, he knows he does not see Grune by no choice of hers, but because he could have easily tricked her into freeing him, and then. . . .

19. Villain
He wrongs her greatly during that time, but, with a kindness nearly matching Rosa's, she forgives him without hesitation.

20. Road
When he tells her of his choice to step away from the path he had walked for the previous King of Baron, she does not judge; her happiness for his younger self's determination is true.

21. Weep
She finds him planting rose bush after rose bush in the special garden, and when she pulls him close, he buries his face in her neck and cries.

22. Blind
He doesn't realize how dear he is to her until he's listed in the same breath as Dhaos, Giles, Ginia, and Link.

23. Pact
He takes small comfort in the fact that not even she can easily make a pact with Eferin.

24. Flight
One day, he makes a simulation of his airship in the Battle Dome and takes her aboard, and the entire time, he cannot stop smiling at her joy.

25. Hard
It's a challenge to get any sense out of Grune, but increasingly, he's finding it worth the effort.

26. War
He knows she's entirely capable of protecting herself on the drafts; all the same, he frets over her along with the rest of his friends and family.

27. Deed
When Selphie asks him if he knows who left such an incredible bouquet of yellow flowers by her clinic bed, he has a good idea.

28. Unknown
He learns that when her response is "Hmm. . . . I wonder," it's best to gracefully concede defeat.

29. Deep
This new Grune's eyes lay him bare, and he wonders just what she sees in his soul.

30. Sudden
She'll certainly never sneak up behind him.

31. Dread
She at last comes into sight, her arm strong around Ceodore's waist, and only then does he remember how to breathe.

32. Burn
With his lack of skill and her lack of memory, the cookies they make together aren't exactly delicious, but at least the kitchen is in one piece when they're done.

33. Clock
Sometimes it's pleasant to spend an afternoon letting Grune set the pace, having nowhere to go and nothing to do save what whim dictates.

34. Words
What she says would be trite coming from anyone else, but her sincerity makes her words ring true.

35. Fast
Truly, it should not have been surprising that they would become friends—not when she had offered to watch over his son at their very first proper meeting.

36. Three
Three may be the perfect number for a family, but it's also just right for a cup of tea with his beloved wife and an increasingly close friend.

37. Place
Fancy ball, battlefield, or flower garden: somehow, she seems perfectly comfortable no matter where he meets her.

38. Irony
He concealed his identity from her so she would always feel comfortable in his presence; now he's the one who feels unsure of his place.

39. Sky
Though Grune's presence certainly helped calm him right to the end, he still cannot help keeping a cautious eye on the moon for weeks afterward.

40. Closet
. . . Well now—this experiment will be difficult to explain to Rosa.

41. Real
He raves through terrible visions as the toxin is flushed from his body, but a warm hand in his keeps him tethered to reality.

42. Fair
It is impossible not to love someone who solves the problem of dividing six pieces evenly among seven people by baking another pie entirely.

43. Knot
He's almost desperate enough to attempt cutting his way free with his sword when Grune happens by and, instead of asking how he got his hair so snarled in the branch of a tree, simply sets to work with gentle hands.

44. Low
Searching for little pools with her when the tide is low, the sand warm under his bare feet, he gains back a little more of his lost childhood.

45. Well
He prays her cheerfulness will never run dry.

46. Token
He gives her a simple figure he carved of an owl, and her joy is as great as if he had gifted her with title and lands.

47. Ugly
Occasionally, he bitterly envies her lack of care; such sourness is always followed by terrible guilt.

48. Lure
His resolve to avoid House 34 (and thus Walter) is destroyed by the scent of freshly baked cookies on the breeze.

49. Drink
As much as he enjoys a good glass of wine, he's learned this is one pleasure not meant to be shared with Grune.

50. Dust
Adjusting his pace is natural now; others may leave the pair of them behind, but he's always in good company when they do.
