Summary: Fifty moments of growing together shared between Grune and Rydia and Kain Highwind.
Author's Notes: And I continue my trend of posting old fic. I'm pretty sure I wrote this somewhere in the summer or maybe fall, but I really can't be more specific than that. I do remember having fun with these, though, so I hope there is pleasant to read as they were to write.
01. Step
The three of them go to Seventh Heaven for supper; Grune can feel their friendship growing by the moment.
02. Squeeze
It's very tight inside the closet the experiment has teleported them into—that must be why Kain's face is so red.
03. Dirt
"Here, you have a smudge," Rydia says, reaching out to wipe her cheek with a thumb.
04. Late
"I just wish he would stop taking such stupid, needless risks," Rydia confesses in the dull voice of one beyond pain, and all Grune can do is hold her tight.
05. Money
The next time Grune visits Cecil's world, she forgets that she needs to pay here; luckily, Rydia makes a quick save and hands over the necessary gil before the baker can raise a fuss.
06. Aid
Being rescued by Grune is embarrassing . . . but he's grateful all the same.
07. Myth
Rydia spends one visit telling Grune the stories of her hometown and not once does she let on its fate.
08. Piece
Bit by bit, little by little, Grune softens the barrier Kain has surrounded himself with, though it was years in the making.
09. Child
Kain is indignant that these two green-haired (. . . beautiful) women keep giggling at him and trying to cuddle him—that's no way to treat Baron's future greatest dragoon!
10. Confess
I do consider you a friend, he writes and is surprised at how much her joy warms his heart.
11. Trick
Even under the influence of an experiment, Rydia just can't bring herself to prank Grune.
12. Out
"Sorry, Grune, he's—away," Rydia says to her chocolate-bearing friend, just barely not laughing at the pout on the face of her now child-in-body-only husband.
13. Best
Grune, like Rydia, has become one of the few who can quiet his constant need to push himself past his limits.
14. Mother
She's still too stunned to have her feelings sorted, but she can at least share in Grune's delight when she gives her the news.
15. Book
One day, Grune shows Rydia and Kain her special book of memories of Baron; they're both quiet for some time after.
16. Victim
"You too?" Rydia asks on a sigh when Kain pushes Grune into the "dragon's cave" then stalks off in search of another "princess."
17. Power
Black magic, eres, and filial spells: no Third Party soldiers are breaking through the line while Grune and Rydia are holding it.
18. Redeem
Now that Grune knows why Kain works so hard at his training, she's determined to cheer him on every chance she gets.
19. Bleak
He can't understand how, even now, she's still smiling.
20. Shrapnel
The bomb explodes, but Kain has already scooped her into his arms and leapt; as the battlefield recedes, Grune giggles in delight, completely unafraid.
21. Humane
After watching Grune's example, he manages to transplant the next flower with all its leaves intact.
22. Anger
Rydia is about to snap at the next person who hails her—but when she sees Grune, she takes a deep breath.
23. Team
Kain does the heavy lifting, Rydia runs the booth, and Grune provides the encouragement.
24. Terror
They spot Grune at the same time, their friend on the verge of hugging a snarling wolf, and never before have either of them run so fast.
25. Natural
Grune can't understand why she wouldn't be friends with him; Kain can't understand why she would.
26. Never
Rydia collapses against the door frame in a fit of giggles when she catches Grune halfway through turning Kain's ponytail into a wispy updo, and he just knows his wife will be reminding him of this for the next sixty years.
27. Fidelity
Kain loves his wife dearly and would never willingly betray her . . . but Grune's bosom is exceptionally distracting.
28. Neglect
After living with Cecil—who manages to have kitchen disasters with a fully functioning memory—double-checking the oven is second nature during her baking session with Grune.
29. Face
Grune can't understand why Kain wears his helmet so much—he has such nice eyes and a pretty smile.
30. Lurk
. . . And then the next experiment has Grune and Kain hunted down and captured by Rydia instead.
31. Grow
At last, Kain attends a party at Grune's invitation with no prompting from his wife—he has a terrible time, of course, but Grune's delight at seeing him there makes it sort of worth it.
32. Skin
Kain looks from Rydia to Grune and privately decides the beach isn't so bad after all.
33. Sick
Being brought chicken soup when both she and Kain are too miserable to get out of bed is lovely, but finding it's edible is even better.
34. Dare
"Oh, Rydia said you would like it," Grune explains when Kain scribbles out a demand as to why, exactly, she thought it would be a good idea to pull his ponytail.
35. Worth
"You're wonderful exactly the way you are," she insists, arms wrapped tight around him, but Kain knows she's wrong.
36. Last
Many galaxies and still more eons away, Grune thinks of them with a warm and wistful smile.
37. Year
Rydia remarks one day that they've been friends for an entire year; Grune is surprised at how little time it's been.
38. Prime
She wants to call Grune one of her female friends her age, but somehow, despite the other woman's appearance, it doesn't seem quite right.
39. Taste
Both she and Kain watch in horror as Grune picks up one of Cecil's "masterpieces" and downs it with pleasure.
40. Beyond
Grune's expression falls, and even under the control of an experiment, Kain knows he's gone too far.
41. Final
Only once, on their last day in Luceti, does Kain hug her first.
42. Event
Definitely the most surreal part of the experiment was having things come full circle and being "kidnapped" by Grune, right alongside Kain (but at least their friend forgot to lock the door).
43. Secure
"We'll walk with you, Grune," Rydia says firmly and Kain nods; looking for fireflies is all well and good, but not alone in a vampire-haunted forest.
44. Ring
Rydia lets Grune look at her wedding ring and doesn't press when her expression very subtly quiets.
45. Settle
She hears Grune sigh happily beside her and, with a smile, prepares herself for a simple afternoon of people-watching on the roof of House 9.
46. Energy
Not for the first time, Rydia wonders where Grune finds all hers.
47. Centre
Grune, truthfully, is more hindrance than help giving out information, but when it comes to making the New Feathers feel welcome, Rydia couldn't do a better job herself.
48. Ordinary
It's not a word that applies to a summoner, the former leader of Baron's dragoons, and a goddess.
49. Voice
When Grune hears Kain speak for the very first time, she nearly drops her flowers in surprise.
50. Hang
Kain turns red when Grune and Rydia applaud the first blooms on his snapdragons (he's still not sure how they managed to get him gardening) . . . but he can't help his small smile all the same.
