Summary: The first peony is for him.
Author's Notes: This was another beginning of a fic that didn't work out--this time because I forgot what season I was setting it in, oops--but that I liked enough to post as a standalone. It's part of an experiment I did with writing poetic prose and atmospheric pieces, and sadly, my hypothesis was correct: I need a lot more practice. Oh well.
"Here, Dhaos."
Gentle fingers grasp the stem and the flower is deftly cut away. The bloom with its soft pink-white petals is settled into her hands and lifted up to him.
"This is for you."
His eyes rest on first the peony, then on her face. Her heart flutters. She could not love even the blue of the sunlit sky more than that gaze.
He does not understand. "Grune, it is your only peony. You should keep it."
An ant runs out from the petals onto her fingers; she lowers it back to its home on the deep green leaves of the plant. It slips away.
She raises her smile to Dhaos. "I grew these for you." She lifts her hands higher. "There will be lots more flowers later. I can share those with everybody. But this is for you."
An answering smile curves his lips. She remembers the touch of them against hers. Her heart flutters again, and beats against her chest when he cups his hands beneath hers.
". . . Thank you."
A breath. Then, he lowers his head. She tilts up her chin. Between them, in their hands cradled together, rests the peony.
