Summary: Far away in the mountains, Grune watches the world end.
Author's Notes: Oh lord, I should have posted this sooner. This was written shortly after October's falling moon event to fill in the gaps of what happened to Grune on Luceti's supposed last evening. There's not exactly a lot to this one, but hey.

The moon was very close now. Grune didn't need to look up far at all to see where it had collided with the barrier and was still forcing its unyielding way down. From time to time, the night sky around the village was seared with brilliant beams of light, always aimed skyward. She wondered if some of it was from Cecil and his family, or from Dhaos. She hadn't been able to convince any of them to come with her to the mountains. She wished she had.

Still, she had been able to give them her important message. She was glad. She knew everything would turn out all right in the end, of course—but she wasn't sure what the shape of that ending would be. That's why everyone needed to know how much she loved them. It was something she needed to say all the time, of course, but tonight . . . it was especially important.

With that thought in mind, she kept watching the moon, barely registering the tremors of the earth beneath her. One hand gently, absently stroked Norma's arm—her friend had fallen into an exhausted sleep against her shoulder some time ago. She made sure to keep an arm around her to hold her safe and warm at her side.

Fenimore and Sophie were asleep nearby as well, the little girl tucked up in Fenimore's arms. Both were still wearing their masks. And Walter was somewhere in the darkness, watching over them all. It was nice to have her family all around her like this. It was . . . peaceful.

Her gaze went back to the moon. Light burst from the village. Everything was very, very silent.

Words came to her from a long way away. "'So this is how it ends. . . .'"

Before she could finish, her attention drifted to her lap, where her journal lay open. Her distant mood faded away, replaced by surprise, then quiet delight.

"Giles?"

After her concern for him had been allayed and as she shared with him, too, her important message, as he told her a wonderful story of friendship—all that while, she was happy. Now, she really could say goodbye with a smile.

That smile was still on her lips when everyone fell asleep until morning.
