Summary: The correlation of salvation and love, or Giles and Grune in fifty sentences.
Author's Notes: I'm quite happy with how these turned out, even if some of them echo
hickumu's Giles and Grune set at
a_fireside a little stronger than I'd like. Still, these were lovely to write--very peaceful.
This is the correlation of salvation and love

"The Unwinding Cable Car," Anberlin
01. Motion
If he can keep Grune moving, never mind in which direction or at what speed, Giles considers it a victory.
02. Cool
The experiments never do seem quite as bad with Grune around.
03. Young
He hasn't flown a kite since he was a boy; it's more fun than he remembers.
04. Last
She takes his hand, and if this was all that his life would ever be, he . . . would be happy.
05. Wrong
He fears corrupting her, but her goodness is so great that she purifies him instead.
06. Gentle
"What's wrong, Giles?" she asks, and it's her gentle concern that comes the closest to breaking him.
07. One
One sunny day, one picnic basket, one pot of tea, one chocolate cake: all of these are best shared between two friends.
08. Thousand
It never stops amazing him that Grune knows every flower in her garden and every friend in her life.
09. King
What was yet another tiresome fairytale becomes a horrifying nightmare the moment he hears Grune's cheery voice greeting him over the journals.
10. Learn
With a great deal of unfocused effort, Grune learns the places he once lived on Earth; hearing their names in her soft voice is a strange experience.
11. Blur
A football to the face, a pair of crumpled glasses in his hands, and with Grune leading the way home, it's a miracle they get there at all.
12. Wait
Very early on in their friendship, Giles learns that if he asks Grune to come to him, he had better grab a book . . . or two.
13. Change
He also learns, somewhat later, that if Grune is staying over, it's best to lock the door when getting dressed in the morning.
14. Command
When an experiment changes him into an awful chimera, he hides away in shame and tells her not to come near—but Grune never was good at following directions.
15. Hold
He's never held hands so much in his life.
16. Need
If Grune had only waited one more minute, he and Ginia could have at least been sated and embarrassed, instead of frustrated and embarrassed.
17. Vision
Given Grune's habit of cheerfully chatting away with Luceti's more unsavoury sorts, Giles thinks the strain on his heart would be somewhat less if she weren't quite so beautiful.
18. Attention
He's gotten very good at knowing when keeping Grune's focus on a topic is far more trouble than it's worth.
19. Soul
She makes him believe even he has a chance at heaven.
20. Picture
They spend hours bent over their photos, sorting through blurry shots, images of fingers and feet and headless bodies, triumphant when they're rewarded with a precious few perfect, lucky shots.
21. Fool
The guilt is immense when he uses her memory against her to prevent her from seeing too much into his past, but better guilt than discovering there actually are limits to her love.
22. Mad
Jack casts aspersions on Grune's sanity and Giles remembers with the utmost clarity why he so strongly dislikes the man.
23. Child
He would say Grune is as innocent as a child, but he's worked in a school—he knows better.
24. Now
Grune is a being of the present; she's taught him there's little reason to fret about the future when right now, there's cake fresh out of the oven.
25. Shadow
The rare times sadness dims Grune's bright cheerfulness, to him, it's an eclipse of his sun.
26. Goodbye
His last sight before he steps into the tunnels is Grune smiling at him and waving; with Ginia's hand in his, he thinks that just maybe this draft won't be as miserable as all the others.
27. Hide
Gently but firmly, he vetoes her idea of hide and seek.
28. Fortune
Since meeting Grune, he wonders if maybe his luck isn't as bad as he once thought.
29. Safe
She holds him close and he lets his eyes fall shut with a sigh.
30. Ghost
He comes across the goddess tending Grune's garden with a gentle smile; for just a moment, he sees two women at once.
31. Book
She finds Giles in the library, fast asleep with a book in front of him, and settles in to take a nap right alongside him.
32. Eye
He's very glad she's so tall—it makes it much easier to look her in the eye and not the, um, elsewhere.
33. Never
He'll do everything in his power—and whatever he can beyond even that—to make sure the smile never fades from her face.
34. Sing
After his shyness is packed away, he sings for her in daylight and moonlight, in Seventh Heaven and at the seashore, but always he remembers that first time in an echoing, red-lit tunnel, when he first discovered her steadfast courage.
35. Sudden
An icy path, their feet shooting out from under them, and when he recollects himself, it's to find his face pressed into soft, warm . . . oh, o-oh good god.
36. Stop
With Grune, stopping and smelling the flowers is quite literal—but it isn't bad.
37. Time
"No—for it is your past that has made you into my friend," she says, and though he still wishes for a second chance, he doesn't ask again.
38. Wash
The next time, he'll bring paints that wash off with soap and water, not turpentine.
39. Torn
There's just the smallest part of him aware, as he turns her away and even shuts the door in her face, that there's something very, very wrong with him.
40. History
He has moments of great curiosity about Grune's past, but he knows that there's no sense in forcing an attempt to find out what he may learn in time . . . or may not.
41. Power
Some people would be concerned that someone with a mind as fragmented as Grune's has that much power, but it's nothing but reassuring to Giles.
42. Bother
He wonders why she does with him.
43. God
She will watch over him for the remainder of his life, and when the time comes, if his fate makes it necessary, she will have a quiet word.
44. Wall
She pulls his down, not with the blunt force of weapons and tools, but with the slow, season-by-season patience of green and growing vines.
45. Naked
Why does this keep happening?
46. Drive
No one but Grune would show that much delight at a beat-up old clunker; after so long without it, Giles can only pray he remembers which is the gas and which is the brake.
47. Harm
When Giles collapses, she only takes four quick steps in front of him and begins casting anew.
48. Precious
It terrifies him how much she means to him, but she, as always, is fearless in accepting how much she loves him in return.
49. Hunger
She could bake him a cake a day for the rest of his life and he'd never have enough.
50. Believe
"Don't worry—everything will turn out all right in the end," she assures him with such certainty that he can almost believe it.

Date: 2011-11-26 04:49 am (UTC)Very glad to hear you enjoyed the set! ♥ I would write these two and their adorable friendship all day if it weren't for that pesky rent thing.
And now I am off to bed, so yeah. Thanks again for reading!

39 is indeed Giles under Dhaos' mental whammy! Some victims have the wonderful experience of actually remaining partially aware of their actions, IIRC, so whee torment. Grune is going to be so confused and so very sad.

18. Smart man. XD
24. Cake is the most important thing *sage nod*
31. Any place is a good place for a nap with Grune. LOL.
39. Dhaos is caught between JUST AS PLANNED and GRUNE AIN'T GONNA BE HAPPY ABOUT THIS, IS SHE. XD If only Grune would not seek him out, then all this would work out perfectly XD;;; I'm laughing at how difficult exposing Dhaos is going to be. Seriously, unless one of Giles' flatmates announces the appearance of his reflection over the journals, there's no way for even Giles to know it was him.
45. It could be worse, Giles. It could be so much worse.
I love this set, too! It has all the friendshippy goodness you could ever need XD Not that no one wants more, of course. XD Grune and Giles make such an adorable friendship, it almost makes me feel guilty pretending to be someone trying to break them up. LOL.

Date: 2011-11-28 12:07 am (UTC)45. And it probably will be. Because we muns are terrible like that. >D
Don't feel guilty! What doesn't kill them makes them stronger, and Grune is definitely going to be forgiving Giles for this. She'll just be sad for a while. :D;;
Glad you enjoyed!

Date: 2011-11-28 12:22 am (UTC)And possibly blaming it on Giles some more, depending on the circumstances. What would probably happen is, if an announcement like that was made, he'd wait for Arche to speak up and then approach her and try to talk it outfor once, despite knowing she has every reason to be angry. LOL.45. *collective groan from the muses*
That's how it always works out, yeah. And besides, I get the feeling I'll enjot it XD;
Glad I enjoyed too! LOLOLOL.

You're a mun--of course you will. :P

Date: 2011-12-01 06:13 am (UTC)It exposed Dawn as a fabrication, and up until that point everyone believed unequivocally that she'd been with them for years when she'd really been created last week. Not only that, but the spell manifests itself in a way that is meant to explain to the caster just what is going on - Buffy, for example, looked at family photos and saw Dawn flickering in and out, looked in her room and saw it empty, all that stuff. It's also a spell Buffy has cast successfully, so Giles would feel safe relying on her to use it.
Also, Helios and Ginia are horrible about keeping their mouths shut. I'm pretty sure someone will point out the reflection to him.
I'm not saying Dhaos is definitely going to be outed, because even if he is it'll take some work, but he's definitely up against some cross-canon competiton here.

Date: 2011-12-02 03:58 am (UTC)...What would Giles even say to Grune if he found out who was responsible for messing with his head? How do you even have that conversation?
